African Cuisine with Chef Thando
Food. Stories. Human connection.
Providence Nikuze, known to guests as Chef Thando, is more than a chef. She is a storyteller through food and a passionate believer in tourism that uplifts people, not just places.
Her journey began far from the kitchen, on Table Mountain in Cape Town, where she worked from 2005 to 2008. Every day, she met travellers from across the world and learned something powerful: tourism is ultimately about people. Shared moments. Real connection. Open hearts.
That belief deepened through family travels across South Africa, and it crystallised in 2023 during a life-changing visit to Bulungula Village in the Eastern Cape. There, Thando experienced community-led tourism in its purest form. Cooking traditional meals on open fires with local women, walking with families, and watching children learn ancestral skills revealed a truth she now lives by: when tourism is rooted in dignity, respect, and love, it transforms everyone involved.
Professionally, Thando is a trained chef with a Diploma in Culinary Arts (Johannesburg Pastry & Culinary School, 2024) and a Diploma in Business Management. Her experience spans chocolate making, pastry work, and professional kitchens. Her dream is clear: to celebrate African cuisine not just as food, but as culture, memory, and identity.
Cape Town’s true magic is found in its people. This experience opens the door to migrant women from DRC, Burundi, Rwanda and beyond — women who survived hardship and rebuilt their lives from nothing. Combined with township braai culture, urban farming, and Thando’s lively cooking sessions, this is a meaningful, emotional journey. Spark Roots Africa keeps it intimate, respectful, and community-focused.
